Hawkstone Estate, Rotherhithe
On Tuesday 17th March 2009, I visited the Hawkstone estate in the company of representatives of the TRA. I was kindly welcomed into the homes of residents who wanted to show me the evidence of widespread serious problems with the condition of the buildings which had not yet been refurbished.
These flats presented examples of the problems, which were present to some degree or another in all of the properties and were not isolated examples. The residents also spoke in heartfelt terms about the slowness of the Council dealing with really serious problems such as water ingress and drain resurgences and how they felt that the estate was being left in limbo while the Council dithered as to whether to rebuild or refurbish the flats. In the meantime the estate is continuing to deteriorate as the Council fails to deliver competently interim repairs.
There was widespread cynicism and despair about the continuing deterioration of the estate and the Council’s seeming inability or unwillingness to tackle its long-standing problems.
I've written to Cllr Nick Stanton, the Leader of Southwark Council, asking him to lay out the council's plans for the estate and to fix the problems we saw.
